Active Release Technique (ART®) is a patented soft tissue technique practiced by chiropractors, physical therapists, and medical doctors. Certified providers of ART® must go through extensive training in the palpation, identification, and treatment of soft tissue injuries. In addition, certified ART® providers must complete ongoing education and re-certification on an annual basis.

Dr. Michael Leahy from Colorado invented and developed the method to treat repetitive strain and trauma of soft tissues. Soft tissues include muscle, fascia (the slippery coating on muscles and organs), ligaments, tendons and nerves.

When tissues are over-used or injured, less oxygen is available in the tissue. The tissues become sticky and adhere to themselves and to adjacent structures. ART® providers find areas of adhesion, and use their hands to manually release the adhesions.

Active Release Technique® can be used to resolve many types of soft tissue injuries and it is used around the world by professional and Olympic athletes.
