How to Use Ice

Application of Cold Therapy

An often asked question in our clinic is "When should I use an ice pack?"  A good rule of thumb is to apply cold to "new" injuries. For example, sprains, strains, bruises, and contusions. We also suggest our patients use Cold Therapy following soft tissue and laser treatment. Cold works as a natural anti-inflammatory.

If unsure whether to use cold or heat, check with your Health First practitioner. If at any time you experience any abnormal sensations (e.g. extreme sensitivity) or skin discoloration, discontinue the use of ice and consult your doctor.

Instructions for the use of cryogel packs

1)      Make sure there is one thin layer of cloth (a paper towel or dish towel) between your skin and the cold pack.

2)      Leave the cold pack in place over the area of concern for at least 15-20 minutes.

3)      It is normal to experience, in order, the sensations of cold, a mild burn, a mild ache, and finally numbness.

4)      Repeat up to 3 times per day.

Instructions for the Application of Ice Massage

1)      Ice massagers can be made by placing a Styrofoam cup full of water in the freezer. When it is frozen, simply peel back the Styrofoam to expose the ice.

2)      Place the ice directly on the skin over the area of concern.

3)      Move the ice slowly in a circular pattern over the entire area of concern.

4)      It is normal to experience in order the sensations of cold, a mild burn, a mild ache, and finally numbness.

5)      Apply ice for 15-20 minutes.
